Can you please introduce yourself. Who is Fiona Wilson?
I’m Fiona Wilson, UK-based editor and lead writer at Breathe Modern.
What is BreatheModern.com?
Breathe Modern is a section of Late Mag and showcases ultra-modern, contemporary interior design and architecture.
What got you into blogging?
Blogging is something I got into post-uni, as it was a popular and easy way to get my writing out into the world. Breathe Modern came later and was born of a need to create a hub for forward-thinking design for the UK.
How much time do you spend blogging?
I spend the majority of the day during the week on blogging (writing and looking for interesting content) and at the weekends ease up and go a little more editorial.
What do you do to bring in readers? Who is your audience?
We’ve actually done very little self-promotion, with readers themselves spreading the virtual word of mouth. We rely more on content; we hope to bring a passion, taste and outlook which is unique to ourselves and our readers, with a genuine love of what we do and what we cover coming across. It’s hard to pinpoint our actual demographic, but with Breathe Modern existing as the the ‘design-focused’ offshoot of Late Mag, we have a certain dual-readership which, following eclectic, open-minded, forward-thinking and passion-fueled content, are presumably like-minded.
What other blogs do you keep an eye on? Can you share some URLs?
I keep a beady eye daily on a certain few most-beloved in my reader for both business and pleasure. To name a few, I most often read Contemporist, Trendir, Yanko Design, Arch Daily and outside of design, Ubergizmo and Born Rich (I do so love to see the endless nonsense one can purchase with silly amounts of money.)
What is the most difficult part of blogging for you? What is the easiest?
I do, unfortunately, suffer boundless indecision and find it hard within the confines of time to choose what exactly to pick for the day. On the flipside, I love to write and my cheesy, cheeky lines flow with ease once I’ve actually got going.
What do you find gratifying as a blogger?
I like my gratification to be instant, and blogging affords me this. I love that I can see my work being read and enjoyed, my style, my passion, my opinions.
What can you advice to someone who wants to start a blog?
I would advise anyone who wants to start a blog to stick to the subject matter. There are rarely many things more annoying than reading a blog on design, music, whatever and finding it littered with politics, etc. That and also to keep the passion. I think if you can’t feel enough to care for your content, to convey a love for it and an enjoyment, you cannot expect your readers to. They will care because you do.
What has blogging brought you? Money or fame?
A little of both, but not enough of either. For me, it’s been an unprecedented opportunity to publsih my writing. Hopefully riches will be following shortly and I’ll be purchasing quite unnecessary goods like gold trainers via Born Rich. I’ll take the money, but you can keep the fame as I’d like to continue poping to the local shop in my pyjamas and slippers for a daily paper.
